Immune system and autoimmunity
The immune system is a set of biological cells and structures aimed to protect our body from foreign cells and molecules. It consists on a number of immune cells, known as lymphocytes, and some specific proteins, called antibodies. Both of them, as a whole, have the capacity to react to virus, bacteries, parasites and even our own corrupted cells, like the cancer ones.
This whole system is the culprit to all transplant and transfusion rejections, by recognizing this cells and perceiving them as malignant.
Occasionally, this system reacts inaccurately and fights our own regular cells, triggering its destruction and causing patologies known as “autoimmune diseases”.
